The beat goes on at IHMRS 2014

The aisles of the International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show (IHMRS) in New York City last week showcased products I would typically categorize as “unusually ultra-safe,” but that didn’t prevent the retail blockbuster trend of “all things bright and bold” from appearing. 

Vibrant hues were spotted on unexpected products typically reserved in black or silver including hair dryers, in-room safes and even hand weights for the gym.

While eco-friendly disposables were grabbing attention for those in search of Food & Beverage trends, artisan bread displays at the popular culinary competition scored raves and ribbons.

Bedding companies assured attendees the jury is still out on the all-white bed trend with heavily patterned blanket-like throws and bright runners inching their way back into the guestroom spotlight. Also catching the eye of those looking to upgrade the bed experience in premium rooms were beds that bend. A concept that’s been around and fairly popular at retail is seeing some action in hospitality.

My personal pick for the a “why didn’t I think of that” innovation is a tie between luggage racks containing a back to prevent luggage from scraping walls while better securing and balancing luggage and meeting room tables with — hello! — plug-ins! Both win for “most logical update on a hotel industry staple.”
