Sock it to me

As we head into the warm months of summer, never did I imagine I would be blogging about a sock trend, especially for the hotel industry. 

Putting your best foot forward with attention-drawing, unexpected patterns and bright colors is why socks are the current top statement piece, and yes, they are making their way into hospitality!

The trend for men to replace their safe black and neutral-colored socks in favor of a pair of statement socks is driving the trend that began in 2014 in the US$5.6 billion-dollar sock industry. Once known as a commodity — or for some, a dreaded gift — socks with wild patterns and bright colors are not only experiencing a major fashion moment, they are making their way onto uniformed employees.

Regardless of how conservative your property may be, there are no rules when it comes to donning a pair of bold socks. In fact, at the recent Wyndham Worldwide Conference in Las Vegas, a few executives were spotted proudly wearing their newly acquired bright socks paired with business-casual attire. Even a past president who spoke was donning a pair!

The trend is also the perfect replacement for the dated and tired “quirky tie” movement witnessed over the past couple of decades on restaurant staff members. Whether incorporated as a front-of-the-house uniform accessory, used as a VIP giveaway or  purchased as an impulse item for a gift-shop operation, bright, patterned socks are excellent conversation-starters while adding a bit of creativity to your staff.

As the famous quote goes, “Life is too short to worry about matching socks!”
