Musings for a New Year
How might hotels operate if the guestroom was positioned as a haven for creative thought — a neutral space where new ideas are formulated and clarified away from the distractions of the office? Might room appointments include a smart board (or colored markers and a doodle pad)? Would in-room services offer personal yoga sessions for business executives?
What if the mini bar concept was expanded and customized to each guest based on an individual’s needs and desires? Might a woman check in to find a selection of shoes and handbags to choose from to coordinate with a gown for that evening’s function?
What might happen if guests began actively networking with each other on Facebook and Twitter based on loyalty to a particular hotel? Might they form a virtual book club and arrange, periodically, to meet face-to-face at the property?
Wouldn’t it be interesting to focus on one person per day in a 365-day look at the day in the life of a hotel? Think of the book or video that would result from featuring individual business and leisure travelers, concierges, couples, chefs, families, HR directors, meeting goers, hotel managers, pets, catering staff, celebrities, waiters, brides and grooms, housekeepers, door persons, party goers, massage therapists, front desk personnel, CEOs, dishwashers, students and hotel owners.
Here’s to bringing fresh thinking into the coming year in a constantly evolving hotel industry.
Happy New Year.
