June is for dads

With Mother’s Day behind us, the third Sunday of June marks the next celebration trend.

Besides being a special day, Father’s Day has also become a notable business opportunity, especially in the world of advertising, thanks to its unique opportunity to market unlimited products, services and, yes, even hotel stays! 2013 spending predictions appear bigger than ever, with many sites predicting a spend that will easily pass the US$12.7 billion dollars spent in 2012 to honor dads around the world.

Another element of this day honoring fatherhood is the thought process of “the gift,” and let me tell you, the task alone sends the trend meter into high gear. While some fathers are easy to shop for, others require days of clever gift sourcing. The what-to-get-dad process has become an annual trend, but givers take note, because it’s the special outings such as a trip to the golf course, a sports event or dinner at a restaurant that rank as the most popular categories, with a staggering US$2.3 billion spent on those Father’s Day activities last year alone. (Electronics, apparel and gift cards were also popular gifts, followed by sporting goods and books and music.)

The number of shoppers who went online to purchase Father’s Day gifts reached 28.4% in 2012, up from 22.1% the prior year. And statistics state shoppers begin their online research about three weeks before Father’s Day, which means if your property hasn’t geared up to participate in this major gift-giving day, you might want to strategize on how you can join in on this celebration trend soon.

Rarely does a holiday pass when I am not asked about “what’s trending” for gift giving, and Father’s Day could very well rank the highest. Let’s face it: Father’s Day is simply one of those occasions that stump a majority of those planning to do some special giving.

In honor of the dads who feel they’ve received their fair share of ties, coffee mugs and cigars, what follows is a list of picks. Although they run the gamut, I am hoping at least one would appease even the most discriminating of dads regardless of how traditional or cutting-edge he may be. As always, feel free to share any suggestions on how best to show Dad he’s number one on June 16th … above and beyond spending quality time together on this special day!
