Innovation

It has been a sad last week or so, losing two great American innovators with the passing of Steve Jobs and Al Davis. The tributes started rolling in about how these two had the passion and drive to change their respective industries (technology & pro football). It got me thinking about the great innovators in our business. Here are some thoughts:
  • Heavenly Bed & Shower: Barry Sternlicht
  • Separating management & real estate: Steve Bollenbach
  • The all-in-one hotel appraisal: Steve Rushmore
  • The international hotel chain: Conrad Hilton, Kemmons Wilson
  • The modern resort/casino: Steve Wynn
  • Online travel: Bob Diener, Jay Walker
  • Lifestyle hotels: Ian Schrager, Bill Kimpton
  • Room service (Gong & Signal): Miriam Benjamin
  • Flush toilet: Sir John Harrington
  • Innerspring bed: Heinrich Westphal
  • Modern elevator: Elisha Graves Otis
  • Tallest building/hotel: Burj Khalifa/Armani
  • Air conditioning: Willis Haviland Carrier
  • Modern French cuisine: Georges Auguste Escoffier
  • First Las Vegas Strip hotel: El Rancho Vegas/Thomas Hull
  • World Series of Poker: Benny Binion
  • First management company: Western Hotels, 1929
  • First hotel school: Ecole h?teli?re de Lausanne
