Influence in the workplace

Yesterday was my first day back in the office in 2013, and I am sure like most of us here in Chicago, where it is very wintery, kick-starting the business muses takes a day or two.

Last week, I left you with some links to what I considered inspiring speeches from HOTELS’ 2012 Hotelier of the World award ceremony. Today, I want to provide another video link, which I hope provides further inspiration for the New Year.

I first met John Caparella maybe 18 years ago when I had much more hair — and no children! John spent many years with hotels around Disney in Orlando, and I know he spent many years working his way up at Sheraton as well. Today, he is the president of the Venetian and Palazzo hotels, as well as the Sands Convention Center for Las Vegas Sands Corp. in Las Vegas. He has always been nothing but charming and carried himself as a true and gracious leader in the U.S. hotel industry.

Back in September, leadership consultant and executive coach Chuck Wolfe reached out to me with this link to an interview with Caparella, who talked about his views of leadership with very practical suggestions.

More importantly, if you take the time to listen to this interview, you will recognize John’s great ability to emotionally connect with others. To take something away from someone who succeeds with relationships is a valuable way to start the year, I hope.

Again, Happy New Year from the HOTELS team, and I wish you connected business success in the year at hand.

One more time, here is the link.
