Communication resolutions

Effective communication is good for your health and the health of your hotel. So, in the interest of being fully engaged and effective at work, I made the following New Year’s resolutions around communicating:

  • I will be clear and not say anything that makes it difficult for my listener to “get” what I’m saying. I will frame things carefully for my listener so that what I say will matter to them.
  • I will be complete with my communications before going on to the next subject and not leave anyone wondering what I said or why I said it. If I’m not sure if my message got across, I’ll ask the listener!
  • I will be responsive to every email from people I know as quickly as possible and always within 24 hours unless my auto-responder lets people know when they can expect to hear back from me. (It’s rude not to respond promptly, and when I do, the communication is complete, and I can move on.)
  • I will be responsible for both my communications to others and how those communications are heard and understood. I accept the extra work on my part that may be necessary for this resolution to be fulfilled. If I fail at any of my resolutions, I’ll clean things up as quickly as possible.

Staying healthy requires exercise, and exercise takes effort. Good communication also requires effort.
