Weed-friendly hotels creep into mainstream

With a number of U.S. states making recreational marijuana use legal, more hotels are discreetly trying to cash in – the latest being, of all names, The Stonehedge Hotel & Spa in suburban Boston, which posted a press release on Friday suggesting it seeks guests “who appreciate the respectful, tolerant and at times playful atmosphere created by sophisticated cannabis consumers and their friends.”

Massachusetts is one of those states that legalized recreational marijuana. And while Troca Hotels President and CEO Beej Das doesn’t come out and overtly state consumers can come to The Stonehedge and get stoned, the release does say while it will not supply cannabis to its guest and will not permit smoking in indoor public spaces, it will welcome “discerning and discrete cannabis consumers to the property and its extensive grounds.” Interpret that statement as you’d like.

HOTELS asked Das on Friday to answer a few more questions about his weed-friendly hotel and is still waiting for responses.

Das also said Troca Hotels’ brand values have always supported the legalization of cannabis. He joins other brands trying to cash in. Last week, Las Vegas-based MJ Holdings (Nevada is another of the now 10 states which have legalized recreational marijuana use), a company that provides complete seed-to-sale services to the regulated cannabis industry, launched the first of its eight currently planned health and wellness cannabis-based hotels in partnership with hotel developer Roger Bloss. Last year, Standard International announced it planned a collaboration with Lord Jones, makers of the world’s finest cannabis and CBD infused products, to launch a retail flagship inside The Standard, Hollywood, California.

Now Das’ 30-room Stonehedge seeks “travelers and guests who already seek lifestyle luxury in their journeys and who appreciate the respectful, tolerant and at times playful atmosphere created by sophisticated cannabis consumers and their friends. These guests include artists, creators, writers, investors, educators, executives, musicians, captain of industry, lawyers, and thinkers.”

Das said while the number of states where cannabis can be legally purchased and consumed has grown, lodging options for the growing base of legal cannabis consumers have remained non-existent. With the introduction of its 420 Experience Package, Troca Hotels will be “a thoughtful and innovative cannabis friendly lifestyle lodging brand.”

“Our decision today is not as part of a crusade for cannabis use but rather, simply a continuation of our commitment to accept well-mannered individual choices,” Das said.
