Sharing for RM sake: Perfecting revenue management strategies today is like finding the holy grail of hotelkeeping. Alas, it remains elusive, but in a PhocusWire-published report, Expedia Group’s Vivek Bhogaraju believes better sharing of ideas on RM strategy can only help hoteliers reach the promise land. This week, he posted what he calls “11 uncomfortable truths about hotel revenue management.” In the name of sharing for the greater good, revenue managers this is worth a read. —Jeff Weinstein

Ethics in hospitality: California Governor-elect Gavin Newsom has announced he will give up control of his wine and hotel business. The Plumpjack Group owns, among other things, four hotels; four Napa Valley wineries; and several bars and restaurants. Title and control of Newsom’s assets will be transferred to a blind trust and he will issue an executive order barring state agencies from doing business with the group to avoid any conflicts of interest. —J.W. 

A singular ski bum: As tourists document every moment of their travel experiences on Instagram, there’s one guy who doesn’t think a photograph can give proper justice to a venue – or can do a good enough job enticing someone to spend a vacation there. And if you ski in the U.S., chances are you’ve probably seen his work. James Niehues, according to Outside magazine, has painted more than 200 pictures of ski trails (“I really like to do the mountains in New Zealand, because there are no trees there,” he says). And while Google helps, he bases his maps on aerial photography, lots of sketches and first-person observation: Niehues describes himself as an intermediate skier. —Barbara Bohn
