Briefs: Choice lights fire on Cambria | New facets to Prism

Choice Cambria plan: Choice Hotels and an affiliate of Oz Real Estate signed a letter of intent to jointly develop Choice’s Cambria brand in the U.S. The goal “could result in building as many as 50 Cambria Hotels in strong corporate travel markets,” said David Pepper, Choice’s development officer. The company authorized US$250 million in capital investment. Cambria Hotels has nearly 120 properties open or in the pipeline.

 


Prism adds eight: Dallas-based Prism Hotels and Resorts acquired eight management deals in Texas, Rhode Island, California and Arizona. That includes the management of three Nylo boutique hotels that the company says will be converted to a major brand, and four hotels in development, including a Hyatt House within walking distance of Apple Inc. headquarters in Cupertino, California.

 


August data for South/Central America, Europe: STR is reporting data for a few regions. Here’s South and Central America’s year-over-year monthly stats for August: Occupancy rose 2.3% to 59.3%; ADR rose 8.2% to US$101.31; and RevPAR was up 10.7% to US$60.10. In Europe, Berlin broke a monthly record and Paris had double-digit performance growth: Occupancy in the region rose 1.4% to 77.9%; ADR rose 4.1% to €118.64 (US$139.35); and RevPAR rose 5.5% to €92.39 (US$108.52).

 


August data for Middle East, Africa: Way to go, Nairobi: The city’s occupancy jumped 59.2% to 56.5%, a reflection of last year’s presidential elections and associated violence that likely discouraged visitors, STR says (ADR fell 4.9% to KES11,559.25 (US$113.40), but RevPAR was up 51.4% to KES6,529.02 (US$64.50). In Africa overall, occupancy rose 2.2% to 63.1%; ADR was up 10.8% to US$115.36; and RevPAR was up 13.2% to US$72.77. In the Middle East, occupancy rose 2.0% to 63.4%; ADR rose 12.2% to US$169.63; and RevPAR rose 14.5% to US$107.50.

 


August data for Asia Pacific: According to STR, Jakarta posted record-breaking performance with a boost from the Asian Games. Year over year for August, Asia Pacific saw occupancy rise 1.0% to 75.7%; ADR rose 2.4% to US$109.06; and RevPAR was up 3.4% to US$82.53.

 


Chicago strike: Striking Unite Here Local 1 union workers representing nine hotels in Chicago reached an agreement amid contract negotiations.

 


Disneyland contract: After months of protests, workers at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, approved a five-year contract that increases salaries 40% over two years. The contract covers 2,700 employees, according to the Los Angeles Times.

 


Peak Snow Time: Wildwood, Missouri-based Peak Resorts Inc. is acquiring privately held Snow Time Inc. for US$76 million. Snow Time operates three ski resorts in Pennsylvania.
