Social networking’s power for recruiting

(How often do you use social media as a recruitment tool? You should be doing it more often, according to HOTELS blogger Tom Roelens, GM of the Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).

Social media influences most aspects of our everyday life, from where to eat to where to spend the next holiday. Social media also influences the way we do business and the way we recruit for our business. It’s part of life’s new routine – but more important, social media is part of a cultural shift. Whether you live on a small island like Lana’i or in a metropolis like Tokyo, social media is the new normal for networking and connecting. It’s also the new normal in the world of recruitment.

While the traditional form of recruitment is still viable, the recruitment – and job-seeker – landscape has shifted tremendously as a result of social media. In today’s world, social recruiting is essential to any successful recruitment campaign strategy.  LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter have become vital marketing platforms for businesses to source candidates and do so in a timely and efficient manner. Social recruitment is typically facilitated through the company’s designated brand social channels, allowing for various outreach ranging from promoting the company’s core values and work culture to posting current job openings.

Now taking the concept of social networking a step further – or a connection further – a successful recruitment campaign goes well beyond the company’s brand channels. It goes well beyond the company’s hiring page, and well beyond the responsibility of the human resources recruitment manager. It all goes back to the basic concept of social networking.

Everyone, from senior leadership to new hires in all areas of the operation, should share in the responsibility of recruiting top talent through their own social network. Similar to word of mouth, social networking is vital to any messaging or campaign, and most potential candidates would consider applying for a new job if they learned about it from a personal connection. Essentially, through the social network.
