Briefs: Snowbound in Zermatt | W’s Japan debut

Airlift in Zermatt: The Swiss ski resort of Zermatt is using helicopters to evacuate about 13,000 tourists stranded by heavy snowfall; a train line was expected to be cleared this morning. Local police were urging people to stay inside to minimize the threat of triggering an avalanche.

W in Osaka: Marriott International’s W brand signed its first property in Japan, the W Osaka, slated to open in 2021. It’s owned by Sekisui House, will be the first-ever W in Japan. The 27-floor new-build will have 337 rooms.

Outrigger hotels on Ctrip: Outrigger Enterprises Group said 26 properties under the brand’s ownership and management have been added to Chinese travel platform Ctrip.com as part of an existing partnership agreement. It also includes Fiji, Guam and Hawaii. 

 


Tower in Taipei: An urban food market and event space in Taipei will become Taipei Sky Tower, which will include Hyatt International’s Andaz and Park Hyatt luxury brands along with retail. Opening is slated for 2020. The 54-story building will be designed by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and Partners of Italy.

 


Richardson in administration: Richardson Hotels Limited and Fowey Hotel Limited, which operates five hotels in South Devon and Cornwall in the U.K., have been placed into administration. The hotels will continue to operate.
