The One Shot: ‘Adults-only’ bubbly at this Portuguese resort

Sometimes it takes just a few small touches to skyrocket rate. What had previously been Tivoli Victoria, located in Portugal’s most southerly Algarve district, was reflagged to Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort in April. At that time the average rate at the 280-key resort was €80 (US$96). Today, that rate has risen to €278 (US$334).

“One of the secrets is defining segmentation,” says GM Tamir Kobrin, who brought in London-based childcare specialists Worldwide-Kids to manage his children’s program.

Only one of the two outdoor swimming pools is family-friendly. The other, a 75 foot-long grass-surrounded pool in a quiet area away from family noise, is reserved for adults only. A slate board announces the no-kids area, but even more effective is the highly visible display of Champagne (set out only for the kids at heart).

“This costs us nothing as Veuve Clicquot, part of the LVMH family, is our Champagne partner. As well as sending a message that this area is adult-only, the bright-orange display provides an opportunity to extend our own excellent brand with relaxation, service and exclusivity,” says Kobrin.
