People on the move: week of Sept. 11, 2017

Manager of adventure programming, director of catering, vice president of sales and marketing. The people making this week’s moves.

The Timber Cove in Jenner, California added two positions: Caroline Appel as general manager and Liana Elghazi as director of sales.

Shane Arnold was named executive chef for the 393-room Hilton Hartford in Connecticut. Arnold joins the hotel from his most recent position as executive chef at the Sheraton Hartford Hotel at Bradley Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.

The Crowne Plaza Louisville Airport named Dan Bergmann as general manager and Everett Christensen as executive chef.

Avani Hotels & Resorts named Alejandro Bernabé vice president operations. Bernabé, who had joined Avani in January as group director, started his hotel career in F&B in Switzerland and worked across multiple disciplines and brands, including varied GM appointments.

BodyHoliday in Saint Lucia named Pascal Bertrand as general manager. Before joining BodyHoliday, Bertrand spent 10 years with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and 10 years with Lux Resorts & Hotels in various positions including GM, hotel operations executive, and corporate operations manager. Most recently, he was the GM at Radisson Blu Azuri Resort & Spa in Mauritius.

Washington, D.C.-based boutique hotel The Jefferson promoted David Bueno to general manager. Prior to this role, Bueno oversaw culinary teams at DC restaurants like Café Milano and Taberna del Alabardero, before becoming The Jefferson’s director of F&B and then its hotel manager.

Salamander Resort & Spa in Washington, D.C., appointed Christina Gibson associate director of catering. Gibson has held various positions at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in McLean, Virginia and the Westfields Marriott in Chantilly, Virginia.

Atlanta-based Hotel Equities named Susan Greenberg as regional director of sales for a portfolio of the firm’s hotels in Texas. Formerly with The Embassy Suites Austin Central as director of sales & marketing, Greenberg also served in similar positions with Marriott full service hotels in Richmond and Austin. 

One Aldwych, Covent Garden in London named Simon Hirst managing director. Hirst began his career with the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, holding senior management positions with the group’s hotels in Hong Kong and San Francisco. Since, he’s been general manager at Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts in London, Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong, and The Four Seasons in Chiang Mai. 

Jerry Jensen was appointed vice president of sales and marketing for The Guest House at Graceland in Memphis. He joins the 450-room property from the Hotel Contessa in San Antonio, Texas, where he served as director of sales and marketing.

The Texas-based Hyatt Regency Austin named Dan Johnson general manager. He joins the property from Hyatt Regency Savannah in Georgia. Johnson has worked with Hyatt Corporation for over 23 years and has held several positions within the company including front office manager, rooms executive, executive housekeeper, and more.

Theresia Kelly was named director of spa at The Westin Jackson, which opened in August. Having extensive experience in luxury spas, resort spas and medical spas, Kelly opened the Wellness Store and Day Spa in Rhode Island in 1999, which she expanded to three locations.

Vanessa Kong was named director of sales and marketing for Marco Polo Hotels, Hong Kong. The position was previously held by Antony Box, who joined the company this January but left in April. Kong was most recently director of sales and marketing at Banyan Tree and Angsana Bintan. 

Le Pavillon Hotel in New Orleans named Adam Korbel as executive chef. Prior to joining Le Pavillon, Korbel oversaw food and beverage at  the Pontchartrain Convention & Civic Center, also in New Orleans. 

Kenneth Macpherson, currently IHG’s CEO of Greater China, will lead the new EMEAA region, which will be created by bringing together two of IHG’s current operating divisions: Europe; and Asia, Middle East & Africa. Taking over from Kenneth is Jolyon Bulley, who has been promoted to CEO, Greater China.

The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, California appointed Robert Marusi as director of sales and marketing, overseeing leisure travel sales, group meetings business and Villa luxury extended stay sales. Previously, Marusi headed sales and marketing for the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, Bermuda. Before that, he held global sales account management and destination sales executive roles with Marriott International.

Washington, D.C.-based Kimpton Mason & Rook Hotel named Candace Mauerhan as director of catering and conference services. Prior to joining the hotel, Mauerhan served as catering director at the Compass Group, also based in D.C.

Apple Leisure Group named Federico Moreno-Nickerson vice president of development. Before joining ALG Development, Moreno-Nickerson spent 13 years as director of product development at Classic Vacations, Expedia’s luxury brand. 

Waterford Hotel Group appointed Jaime O’Connor director of sales of the Sheraton Hartford Hotel located inside Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. Most recently, O’Connor worked as director of sales at the Sheraton Hartford South.

Gleneagles promoted Conor O’Leary as its new GM. The appointment will see him take the operational lead at the 5-star Perthshire hotel and sporting estate. Immediately prior to arriving at Gleneagles in 2016 as hotel manager, he was director of F&B at the Grand Hyatt in Dubai, with responsibility for 14 restaurants and bars at Hyatt’s largest global food and beverage operation. 

Greg Schmidt was named GM of the AC Hotel San Francisco Airport/Oyster Point Waterfront, opening in October. Schmidt was most recently general manager at the Residence Inn by Marriott in San Diego. 

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado named Ismar “Izzy” Uzicanin as manager of adventure programming. Uzicanin has traveled in more than 25 countries, taking others on premier active travel trips with Backroads in Europe leading cycling, hiking, and kayaking adventures on the Dalmatian Coast, where he spent his summers as a child. Before joining Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado, Uzicanin and his wife, Kelsey, traveled around the world for eight months, including to Antarctica.

IntercityHotels has several changes of management: Anton M. Wüstefeld will be GM at the IntercityHotel Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof Süd, which will become the brand’s new flagship when it opens in 2019. Uwe Troll will take over as general manager of the IntercityHotel Frankfurt Airport following nine years at the IntercityHotel Mainz. That vacancy will in turn be filled by Stefan Marczinkowski. Marcus Cameroni, previously director of leisure sales within the central sales team, will leave Deutsche Hospitality Corporate Office to become GM in Magdeburg.
