Hard Rock lawsuit: The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 has filed an unfair labor practice charges against the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas with the National Labor Relations Board. The union alleges that the company, in anti-union communications to its workers, promised to work on solving their workplace “challenges” instead of them choosing to have a union, falsely accused the culinary union of stealing and selling employee contact information, and giving employees the impression that it was futile to engage in collective bargaining.

Mallorca food poisoning scam: A group of British individuals have been arrested for defrauding hotels of some US$72 million, while a British insurance company has also lost its license for its involvement in a similar scam. The individuals mainly operated on the island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, where the local hotel industry believes they have been scammed out of an estimated total of US$60 million in total. Other popular tourist destinations believe they were cheated out of an estimated US$12 million.

Holiday Inn Toronto: As a result of the Greater Toronto Airport Authority’s move to transform Toronto Pearson International Airport into a “Global Mega-Hub,” Holiday Inn has proposed two neighboring hotels. Now seeking site plan approval, the proposals call for a 7-story hotel, 110-room property as well as a 7-story 111-room property.
