The Hot: Standard encourages activism with phone booth

Gimmicky? Maybe. But it seems the message is honest, filled with truths and not intended to drive an ROI. The Standard, High Line in New York City’s West Village has installed a telephone booth outside its front door so visitors can directly reach out to their Congressional representatives, get involved in the political process and try to make a difference.

The “Ring Your Rep” booth was conceptualized over the past few months as the hotel team wanted to empower guests and community with the proper tools and a platform to make their voices heard on important issues – whatever they may be.

“The purpose is to empower The Standard’s guests and community, and provide a platform for their voices to be heard,” Corey Tuttle, vice president of marketing and communications at The Standard, told HOTELS. “If we are able to encourage our community to speak their minds, we’ll feel the initiative was a success.”

The Ring Your Rep phone booth will be in place indefinitely. “We hope that guests will take this resource and knowledge, and engage with their representatives – whether they are at our properties or not,” the representative added.

The phone booth outside the hotel dials directly to the U.S. Capitol switchboard. Callers can punch in their zip code, choose the representative and leave a message. For callers needing help, the hotel has a script to follow located inside the booth.

The Standard said it plans to include the same feature on its room phones at all five of their hotels.
