News in brief: Union, China pipeline, Sydney

Union in Seattle: Union Investment acquired the 222-room Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Seattle, which opened in 2015, for US$90 million. It’s the Hamburg-based company’s first purchase on the U.S. West Coast.

 


China pipeline down: Lodging Econometrics’ latest pipeline trend report for China puts the country’s total pipeline at 2,340 projects/525,640 rooms, down 7% year-over-year. Under construction: 1,671 projects/357,466 rooms, down 11%; largest franchise companies are Marriott International, Hilton and IHG; markets with the largest pipelines by project count are Shanghai with 125, Guangzhou with 100, Suzhou with 88 and Chengdu with 82.

 


Potential Sydney tower: Developer Dexus Group and Perth billionaire Stan Perron have applied to develop a A$1 billion apartment (US$762.2 million) and 6-star hotel complex on the edge of Sydney’s Hyde Park, a mid-town location which has attracted high-end unit towers in recent years.

21c plans dropped: The city government of Indianapolis, Indiana, has dropped its plans to help Louisville, Kentucky-based 21c Museum Hotels build a hotel there after two years. The property will go back up for bid.

Rotana in Dubai: Rotana signed an agreement with RSG International, a UAE-based conglomerate, for a new 5-star hotel and serviced apartment project in Dubai, located in Sufouh Gardens on Sheikh Zayed Road. The 54-story, 534-room property will be managed by Rotana on behalf of RSG International and is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2020.

 


Sala in Thailand: Thai boutique resort operator Sala Hospitality Group will open its third property in Thailand, the Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa on Koh Samui, in two phases starting in November.

Nikko in Vietnam: Okura Nikko Hotel Management Company made an agreement with Chuo Vietnam Company to manage the Hotel Nikko Nai Phong with it opens in Hai Phong, Vietnam, in 2020.

W in Marbella: Marriott announced the signing of a 200-room W Marbella and The Residences at W Marbella in Spain, scheduled to open in 2021. They are being developed with Sunrise Inversiones 2015 SL.

 


Avani in UAE: Minor Hotels’ Avani Al Marjan Island Ras Al Khaimah Resort will be part of the four man-made islands in Ras Al Khaimah. The 225-room resort will open in late 2019.

 


Hilton milestone: Hilton recently introduced its digital key technology to its 1000th hotel. Hilton initially brought the technology to its properties in 2015 and plans to install it in 2,500 hotels this year.

 


RCI loyalty program: Vacation exchange company RCI, part of Wyndham Destination Network, has added a benefits program, Club 365. The company says it offers incentives to increase closing rates and can build a pipeline of future prospects.
