What’s Hot: Cape Town’s Mount Nelson revamps guestrooms

Cape Town’s Belmond Mount Nelson has refurbished 48 guestrooms and suites via London-based designer Inge Moore. Chandeliers and old world elements dominate the new space, in homage to the original hotel, opened there in 1899.

Windows and casings have been restored and painted white, while new drapery pelmets are smaller than before. Beds have been reoriented to be the centerpiece of each room and at the foot of each sits a locally made bench introduced to the Cape by the early settlers. Additional chandeliers and crystal wall lights have been added to guestrooms, while bathrooms feature white and grey marble and chrome taps.

Heirloom furniture pieces include dark timber tables and cabinets with brass and leather detailing, while other pieces have been designed as a modern take on traditional pieces. In re-planning the rooms, wardrobe space was also expanded.

Rooms have been accessorized with collections of over-scaled paintings and objects, in part curated by Moore. The new artworks have joined existing pieces, many of which depict landscapes and flowers.
