News in brief: World tourism, Aloft, Best Western Plus

World Tourism Barometer: International tourist arrivals in 2016 grew by 3.9% to reach a total of 1.24 billion, according to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Some 46 million more tourists (overnight visitors) travelled internationally last year compared with 2015. Last year was the seventh consecutive year of sustained growth following the 2009 global economic and financial crisis. By region, Asia and the Pacific (+8%) led growth in international tourist arrivals in 2016; Africa (+8%) rebounded after two weaker years; positive momentum continued in the Americas (+4%); and Europe (+2%) showed mixed results, with double-digit growth in some destinations offset by decreases in others. Demand in the Middle East (-4%) was also uneven.

 


Aloft in Dublin: Marriott International announced plans to launch its Aloft Hotels brand in Ireland through a franchise agreement with Blackpitts Hospitality Limited. Aloft Dublin City is slated to open in spring 2018; it will be operated by Dublin-based Pembroke Hospitality Limited.

Best Western Plus in Lawrence: Wichita, Kansas-based Hospitality Development of America plans to build a US$14.5 million Best Western Plus hotel and become the first tenant of The Mercato of West Lawrence, a mixed-use site adjacent to a new regional sports complex. Construction on the four-story, 120-room hotel is scheduled to start this summer and opening is set for early 2018.
