News in brief: Kimpton, Plateno, international tourism

Kimpton expands in Florida: Kimpton Hotels and Resorts will expand its presence in Florida with a new hotel in Miami set to open in 2018. Kimpton Hotel South Beach will include 96 rooms, a restaurant, rooftop pool and fitness center.

 


Plateno to open in Germany: Plateno Group will open two 7 Days Premium-branded hotels in Germany. The 91-room 7 Days Premium Hotel Munich Sendling is scheduled to open in Q4 2017 and the 150-room 7 Days Premium Hotel at Leipzig/Halle Airport will open at the end of 2017.

 


International tourism up: According to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, international tourism grew by 4% between January and June 2016 compared to the same period in 2015. Destinations worldwide received 561 million international tourists (overnight visitors), a 21 million increase from 2015. China was top source market, reporting double-digit growth in expenditure on international travel (up 20% in the first quarter of 2016). The U.S. was the second largest market, with increased expenditure on outbound travel by 8% through July. Germany was the third largest market, reporting a 4% increase in expenditure through July.

Moxy in Nashville: A US$37 million Moxy hotel is planned for the Hillsboro Village neighborhood in Nashville, Tennessee.  The Moxy Nashville Vanderbilt will be co-owned, developed and operated by Summit Management Corp. The 130-room hotel will be the second Moxy-branded hotel planned in Nashville, joining the downtown 168-room Moxy Nashville.

No bids for NOLA airport hotel: New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong International Airport did not receive any bids for a new hotel at the front entrance to its new US$807 million passenger terminal. The proposal included a nationally branded, full-service, 140-room hotel connected to the terminal that is currently under constructed and scheduled to be complete by October 2018. The deadline for proposals was September 16.

Playa Hotels’ proposed IPO: Playa Hotels & Resorts B.V. filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission relating to its proposed initial public offering. The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the offering have yet to be determined.

Dubrovnik Sun Gardens sold: Dubrovnik Sun Gardens in Croatia was sold to a Chinese investor for an undisclosed price. The beach resort includes 201 rooms and suites, 2017 apartments, leisure and health facilities, several restaurants, retail and food shops and meeting space.
